The Bird's Nest Cafe
We are fortunate enough to have our own school café on site in our VC building; The Bird's Nest Café. Our café is a thriving environment for our learners in Key Stages 4 and 5. Here they work alongside our catering manager Matt and our Catering Assistant Teresa to run the café and work towards qualifications that are recognised within the catering industry; thus supporting future pathways and personal independence, social and life skills.
Our younger children and young people across the campus also enjoy regular visits to the café to put in to practice their social skills and life skills that are embedded into the curriculum, such as ordering at the till and doing money exchange. The students working in the café interact professionally, inspiring our younger cohort and raising aspirations.
Moreover, our café environment is often used for family events such as coffee mornings and so the learners feel a sense of community whilst working and developing their employability skills.
What roles do our learners take on in the café?
- Preparing and cooking food
- Serving customers and using the till
- Barista service
- Supporting events such as coffee mornings and external agency meetings
- Stock control
- Washing up
- Cleaning
